5 Mistakes People Make When Trying to Lose Weight

It’s easy to get discouraged and want to throw in the towel when you’re not seeing the results you expected. Are any of these mistakes holding you back from your goals?

1. Too Extreme
It’s difficult to follow a plan when taking extreme measures like eliminating a of foods or entire food groups. If it can’t fit into your daily schedule and lifestyle, it won’t stick and definitely won’t last. Focusing on what you can have instead of all the “can’t haves” is much easier, mentally, to incorporate. You’re more likely to be consistent with a regimen that isn’t so rigid – remember, all foods can fit in a healthy diet and there’s no such thing as a perfect diet!

2. Inconsistency
Monday-Thursday is great, but weekends are completely “off the wagon.” While there’s no need for a perfect diet or fitness regimen, consistency over time is crucial for progress. One day isn’t going to throw off weeks of consistency and progress, but if every weekend is completely off track, it might be time to find a way to be consistent on the weekends, too.

3. Not Tracking
Tracking food intake is a great way to become more aware of what you’re actually eating. A food journal or an app can be helpful to get more information and help hold you accountable and also understand portion sizes a little better. Tracking foods and beverages will also allow you to make sure you’re getting what you need! If you’re not tracking, you might be under or over-estimating how much you’re eating.

4. Accountability
Having someone to support you and encourage you in your weight loss journey is so important. Whether it’s a friend, coach, family member, find someone! There’s going to be days that feel harder than others, but when you have someone checking in with you and holding you accountable, it makes a huge difference. Have a set event or timeline for your goals? You’ll most likely work a lot harder. Working with a nutrition coach can also help you set goals and stay on track.

5. Getting Caught Up in the Media
There’s no doubt there’s a ton of information on the internet and social media when it comes to weight loss. It can be easy to get discouraged seeing another type of diet or fad “working” for someone else. Don’t play the comparison game and think that the plan you’re following isn’t going to work or isn’t the right way to lose weight. Progress and results happen with consistency and accountability over periods of time. Don’t let Instagram influencers try to convince you that you’ve chosen the wrong plan to lose weight.
