Are You Getting Enough Fiber?
Fiber is our FRIEND! If you’re not sure how much fiber you’re getting in your current diet, I recommend taking a closer look at your fiber intake. There’s so many benefits to getting enough fiber in our diet. Plus, the foods that contain fiber have tons of other health benefits — fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, nuts/seeds.
Benefits of Fiber:
Have regular bowel movements
Control blood sugar levels
Achieve/maintain a healthy body weight
Lower cholesterol levels
How much fiber do I need?
Take a look at your food labels or use a food database to look up amounts.
Women Ages 50 & Under: 25 grams/day
Women Ages 50 & Older: 21 grams/day
Men Ages 50 & Under: 38 grams/day
Men Ages 51 & Older: 30 grams/day
One of the best ways to make sure you’re getting enough fiber is including plenty of fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans/legumes and nuts/seeds in your diet each week!
Here’s some tips to get started:
Aim for 1/4-1/2 of your plate non-starchy veggies
Aim for 2-3 servings of fruit each day
Choose whole grains over refined grain products
